What It Takes to Be in the Arts

Being an actor onstage is not something that can just be a hobby on the side, if the desire is there to be a popular stage artist. One must dedicate themselves to acting, singing, and/or dancing in order to become successful.

Mental Determination

Being successful always starts in the mind. Knowing one’s goals is the first step before actually going after them. There is a difference, however, between wanting to succeed and wanting to be perfect, as Dr. Srini Pillay says in his Psychology Today article. While it’s important to want to be a great stage performer, one must remember that perfectionism can really wear a person down, and can be more detrimental than helpful. Concerning dedication, though, knowing that you want to be on stage as a singer, dancer, or actor, and you want to actually succeed is step one to dedicating yourself. Not giving up after some failed attempts is also incredibly important. Every stage performer will fail, just like anyone else, however, it’s those that don’t give up post-failure that end up succeeding.

Physical Determination

Once it’s established in the performer’s head that they want to become successful, the next step is getting involved in the dance, singing, and/or acting world. This means joining stage schools, starting an exercise routine, and beginning in small-scale productions. Hues Productions suggests studying the “greats” - find someone that has succeeded in the same field that you’re interested in, and copy what they did. Oftentimes that discovery shows us that they worked hard at it every day in order to get to where they are today.

Keep Building Skills

Now that you have already established mentally that you want to succeed and you’ve taken steps by joining a stage school, it’s time to put yourself a head above the competition. This means start taking extracurricular classes, like the ones that Hues Productions hosts. We have Master Classes several times a year, taught by professionals from Broadway and the West End, which is a great way to learn from the pro’s directly, maybe even meet your hero! The classes are small, generally only 20-30 students, which makes it perfect for intimacy and real hands-on learning. Other ways you can build your skills outside of stage school is by joining local clubs and performing in their small-scale productions, because nothing quite prepares you for the stage like an actual performance.
